One place that you can still visit that is just like the filming location in 1965 is at Red Rock Canyon and the Trona Pinnacles in California. Over four days from late December 1964 to early January 1965 they filmed all the stock footage of the desert that they would later use throughout the series. That included shots of the chariot, jetpack in flight, the cyclops, the Jupiter 2 (really the Gemini 12) crash landing, and the aerial shots seen though the viewport. One weekend a group of us visited there and tried to recreate some scenes of the Jupiter 2 in flight and the chariot crossing the desert using miniatures. These are some photos from that trip and some comparisons of screen shots from the series to how it looks now.
