The Feline Mystique started filming in late November 2019. Katie Otten returned after playing Andrea in Felis Catus to play Penny in human form, and Jesse Millspaugh played the alien voice. The rest of the crew were James Hedges, John Murphy, Matthew Kischer, and Tim Raygor. The Feline Mystique came about after Katie Otten, who had guest starred in Felis Catus, said she had fun making that episode and would like to do another sometime. I looked at my ideas for future movies and found one that just basically said, "Penny turns into a human." I thought Katie would be great in that and I wrote it pretty fast in just a day. My cat's behaviors provided many of the ideas for the story and I wondered what cats really thought of their owners. At first my idea was having Penny's mind temporarily fuse with another woman's mind and body through an accident with an alien machine, I thought it would be a fun way to explore that concept. To suddenly see Penny transform from someone who Will always thought of just as pet to a woman would provide an awkward way for the two of them to express their true feelings towards each other. After starting to write the story in that direction I realized that introducing another woman character into the story would complicate it and make the set up too long, so I went with just having Penny directly transform into a human through an alien device. I told Katie my idea for this story for her character and she thought it would be fun to play a cat and offered some ideas as well. I started writing the script without knowing yet how it would end, just that either Will or Penny should sacrifice themselves in some way to save the other. At the end it seemed apparent that Penny should sacrifice herself which ties in with the overall arc of the series of how Penny is there to look out for Will. I met with Katie for a table read of the script and she suggested the funny Penny eating and drinking scene with I added to the revised script. I moved the production of this episode up to number five because it looked so fun to film and wanted to enter in the Sandy Dennis film festival. By the way, The Feline Mystique title was inspired by the title of a popular 1960s book, The Feminine Mystique, written by Betty Friedan which is widely credited with sparking the beginning of second-wave feminism. There are "Easter Egg" clues to what the next episode was to be about hidden in this episode. They are Penny's comics Sweethearts and All For Love on the table and briefly seen on the computer monitor is Edgar Allan Poe and a raven. If that weren't enough Raven reference, Will later lays a photo down on a Raven edition of Poe's book.
